What is Myotherapy Massage and what to expect from Dogapy Rehabilitation's first session

Updated: Oct 4, 2021

Why would my dog need a massage.

Myotherapy is a holistic therapy that treats the animal as a whole and has both physical and physiological benefits. The use of fingertip massage and the act of “touch” helps to build trust between the therapist and patient.

Gentle manipulation of the bodies muscles and fascia help to relive tension, improve blood flow to the area and stimulate lymphatic drainage to reduce pain and inflammation. All of this allows the body to work in an ideal body function and balance.

Massage is a benefit to all dogs, whether they just want to feel good, are working animals experiencing repetitive over use of muscles, anxious puppies and those suffering with chronic pain.

Each massage session will take up to one hour. Massage will only be done with your dog’s consent. Therefore, if they aren’t settling or enjoying the experience the session will be brought to an end.

On your initial appointment Helen will take time to get to know your dog and you. A series of questions will be asked about your home lifestyle, so together we can form a plan to get maximum benefit from these sessions. Helen will then start with a basic massage technique to allow your pet to get to know them. These will be built upon each week with your dog’s consent to receive a full massage routine.

Before each session your pet will receive a health check to make sure they are healthy enough to receive treatment. You will also be asked how they were after last time and how they are getting on at home to ensure they are getting the most out massage.

It is recommended massages should be given every seven to ten days, however each treatment pattern will be tailored specifically to you and your dog.

At Dogapy Rehabilitation we believe in treating each animal as an individual and looking after them as a whole, rather than just a specific area of treatment.

We look forward to working with you and your dog to make a pain free and happy dog!
